I have to thank my father, Richard Franke, for chronicling Sulwen's adventures better than I have recently. And even not-so-recently, come to think of it...

Before we slip in to December and rush headlong into the Christmas holiday season, here is a compilation of our "all in all -- a wonderful fall."

The Colors of Summer

A jaunt over to Grandad's swing on Sunday afternoon turned into an impromptu photo session with Marilyn Holmes, a friend of Claudia's who was visiting from Juneau, Alaska.

Marilyn took some great photos of Sulwen when she was about nine months old and it was very fun to have her snap and share these. She even gave Sulwen her first lesson in photography!

As you can see, the swing is a perennial favorite and Claudia's garden is going strong, especially the many types of squash plants.

And of course, Sulwen picked out her own clothes, of which there were many, many layers.

Spring Break with the Boulder Drapkins in Del Mar

Last week we enjoyed seeing the Boulder Drapkins in Del Mar during their spring break. Sulwen hadn't seen her cousins for nearly a year and we all had a great time catching up. A big thank you goes to Diane for making so many arrangements, to Lindsay, Hayley, Jessica, and Fin for taking such good care of Sulwen - and to the whole family for sharing their rental home with us!

Bower Park Sunday

Last Sunday dawned cold and clear so we headed up to Gualala to Bower Park. There were lots of families out enjoying the afternoon after a week of rain.

Of course the geese had something to say (as you can tell in the video below) and so did Sulwen since there is a small outdoor stage/theatre, which is perfect for solo performances.

Drapkin-Franke Family Christmas 2010

We feel so fortunate that our family is willing to come to Timber Cove for the holidays. We *love* having everyone here and the time always flies by.

Nanny came for her usual early holiday celebration before heading to Boulder. This year Grammy and Grandad were almost local in Santa Rosa and came up several times during the month and then were here for Christmas eve and day. Sulwen is at the magical age for Christmas and it was delightful to see her enthusiasm and joy this season.

The day after Christmas, Evan's family came over from Sacramento and Hailey and Bill drove down from Oregon. We had a second holiday celebration together and on the Maryland Frankes' last day in town we went to the Charles Schultz Museum in Santa Rosa and then ice skating across the street. Sulwen can't wait to see her cousins again - and to go ice skating at the "indoor snow place"again as well.

Thanks to our family for coming and to Evan, Ian, Dad, and possibly others for sharing your holiday photos to make this slideshow possible. I so appreciate it!

A Few Fall Favorites (before it's too late!)

We had a very busy fall. Sulwen started preschool and loves it. Her going means I have more time to work and a little less time to do things like keep her blog updated. My apologies.

In 2011, we'll hope to keep it updated a little more frequently than the past few months!

Here are a few of our fall favorite pics to catch you up.

Sulwen still loves dressing up - these hand-me-downs are from the neighbor.

Sulwen moved to a "big girl" bed this fall. She stays put except at nap time.

We took several trips to the zoo in the fall. The carousel is always a favorite.

We recently cleaned out the hot tub because the frogs had moved in and didn't keep it quite as tidy as we would have liked (not to mention one or two that got a little too hot and couldn't quite make it out - eek).

Sulwen really likes the idea of frogs but up close and personal they felt a little sticky and different.

The bubbles are from another day when Nanny came to visit (yay!) but we're hoping the "black and white bathing suit on the deck" theme ties it all together.

Sulwen Turns Three - Happy Birthday!

While we had planned to have a large family gathering in Oregon for Sulwen's third birthday this summer, the vicissitudes of life intervened and we found ourselves making alternate arrangements. We are so grateful to everyone for having the flexibility to make the changes and come to Timber Cove instead. We needed to have our cousinage time!

Grammy, Grandad, Uncle Evan, Aunt Laura, Ian, and Fiona were on hand to make the birthday weekend a fun and memorable event. We had lots of quality family time, rode the neighbor's horses, made trips to the beach and creek, and celebrated Sulwen's turning three with cupcakes, candles, games, balloons, and presents galore.

Fourth of July Block Party

With Stephen in India again this 4th of July, Sulwen and I went to see Nanny in Palo Alto and attend the annual Block Party. This tradition (well over 30 years old) is a favorite of all Sulwen's cousins and she has now joined their ranks as a die-hard fan.

She got to know the American flag, decked her trike out with flags, enjoyed swimming in the Mason's pool, met many new, young faces on the block, ate veggie dogs with ketchup and mustard, and explored the double-block on Forest Ave. with wild abandon.

Sulwen is still talking about it now. I'm not sure she can wait another year for it to happen again!

Sunny Days at Stump

At last - a new blog post!

We had some gorgeous, warm, sunny days last weekend and Sulwen got to enjoy Stump Beach for several days in a row. With the creek meandering down to the beach into the ocean, osprey soaring above, a mild wind, tide pools and gentle waves, it was a recipe for delight. We all enjoyed our time at Stump and Sulwen is a beach convert.

Daddy's Birthday Trip

For Stephen's 39th birthday we took a little trip in our backyard to see things we'd heard about but had never gone to see.

Our first stop was Montgomery Woods where there were some phenomenal old growth redwood trees. It was amazing. Then we headed west/south to Point Arena, to the B. Bryan Perserve. We got there just in time for the evening rounds and met all the animals. We stayed the night in the carriage house there and the next day drove out to the Point Arena Lighthouse. It was a beautiful day but chilly and windy. We all walked to the top.

Everyone enjoyed Stephen's birthday trip and now have new destinations to recommend to visitors!

Daddy's Birthday Trip

Spring Trip to Arizona

Family, friends, fun! That about sums up our now annual trip to Green Valley to see Grammy and Grandad in their snow bird retreat.

This trip, not only were we fortunate to see Sandy Cisneros (Nana), the Radeker Family (Sue, Scott, Quint, and Lauren), Grammy, Grandad, Hailey Mama, and Uncle Bill Little but also Grammy Becky and Uncle Don from Albuquerque.

It was an especially great time to be together because we celebrated Grandad's 73rd birthday on April 11th.

Sulwen and I spent Easter morning in Palo Alto with Nanny. She had just returned from spring trips with the Boulder Drapkins and the Lyerly Family. We were so happy she was home and that we could spend Easter with her.

We had plans to leave in the afternoon to head to Grammy and Grandad's Arizona retreat. Unfortunately the flight was quite delayed but we did finally make it!

Millie is with us because Denny had a major back surgery and needed a little recovery time. We've loved having her back but do notice she's a little more mopey. We think she knows the circumstances are different this time around. We're doing what we can to cheer her up.

Japanese Tea Gardens

On a recently rare and beautiful sunny day Sulwen and I met Nanny at Golden Gate Park to visit the California Academy of Sciences where we had been gifted an annual pass (thank you everyone!). More on that coming soon....but after a rather crowded and busy visit to CAS, Nanny, Sulwen and I sought haven at the Japanese Tea Gardens across the way.

I haven't been since I was a child and hardly anything had actually changed - giving it the perfect sense of timelessness.

It was heavenly and as you can see Sulwen frolicked to her heart's content. We'll be going again.

Sulwen's Jelly Cove

We hate to admit where the phrase "Jelly Cove" comes from.....maybe we won't even tell you. At any rate, after all the rain we've had our creeks are really flowing and great fun right now. Sulwen likes to go to "Jelly Cove" which is down at Stockhoff Canyon where a little sandy edge of the creek peeks out and she can dig, build, splash, and explore.

We've also been relishing watching the creek race down into the ocean at Stillwater Cove - especially on the sunnier days we've had (not too many of them in recent history).

Oh - OK - Jelly Cove is a phrase from Dora the Explorer and if you need to ask who that is, don't. If you have toddlers in your life you'll find out soon enough!

One Last Visit from Uncle Ernie

While I was away in Florida, Stephen's cousin Ernest Stead-Richardson came back to Timber Cove with Nanny (via Yosemite) for one last visit before heading back to Australia to begin a new job. Ernie spent the last six (or was it seven??) months traveling in the US, visiting family, and stirring up the surf wherever he went.

Good luck with your new job Ernie - and come again soon! We know there's more traveling for you to do here.

Visit to the Zoo in San Francisco

For Christmas the Maryland Franke Family gave us an annual pass to the San Francisco Zoo. We took Sulwen in early January before we headed to Monterey. It was her first time to the zoo.

It was cold and many of the exhibits were closed but it was a great day to introduce her to the zoo. There were very few visitors and we could get up close to see the baby gorilla, lions, giraffes, etc. Her favorite place by far was the children's zoo - especially the pygmy goats.

We will definitely be visiting as often as we can. Thank you Evan, Laura, Ian, and Fiona!

Mama's Birthday Trip to Monterey

For Mom's 40th birthday we drove down to our old stompin' grounds in Monterey. Nanny joined us and we met Hailey and Bill there as well. Somehow we managed not to get Nanny in a single picture but you can be sure that she took some of the photos below (thank you Nanny!).

First order of business was visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Hailey and I worked there as junior docents when it opened 25 years ago. It still holds a terrific fascination for us, especially the otter exhibit.

We enjoyed a birthday dinner at a staple from our youth, Tillie Gort's. They made us a vegan poppy seed cake for the celebration.

Stephen and I took some good long walks in Pacific Grove and the short weekend passed very quickly. We hope to take Sulwen back to Monterey for a longer stretch of time where she can explore the tide pools and creatures she learned about at the Aquarium.

Thank you family for making the passage into 40 such a fun and memorable event! And special thanks to Cindy Franke who scanned and sent the photo of Hailey and me in multiple pigtails!

An Early Christmas with Nanny Claus

Nanny came to Timber Cove before she headed to North Carolina and Boulder for the actual holidays.

As always Nanny brought Christmas with her. This is the first time that the magic of Christmas seems to be truly alive for Sulwen. It was very evident in her delight with opening presents, singing carols, watching "Frosty the Snowman" and turning on Christmas lights.

Christmas is Coming

Christmas is coming and this year Sulwen is old enough to get excited about many of the traditions.

She loves Christmas lights and the Christmas tree. For a very curious two-year old, she is surprisingly good about the "one finger touch" on the ornaments. She is also learning a few holiday songs and "helping" with the cookie baking that goes on this time of year. I'd say Sulwen is less good about "one finger touch" or preferably "no touch" where cookie baking is concerned, so she gets to make her own batch while I make everyone else's - fear not!

Mushrooms Galore!

We are definitely behind the times with our posts. Others have caught Halloween and Thanksgiving aptly. For a glimpse of Sulwen at Thanksgiving, visit her Grandad's page.

It is serious mushroom time here on the coast and Sulwen's latest passion is discovering them. A walk (well, ride in the pack) in the park with Dad affords her the opportunity to see fungi in a plethora of shapes, sizes, textures, and colors. It is fascinating for her and Sulwen is often heard exclaiming, "Gotta find more!"

We do have a "no touch" policy with mushrooms unless she is handed them by us. She has helped plant some porcini spores under pines on our property, as you'll see below. And she has also learned how to view the less friendly mushrooms in a safe way.

Go Stanford! Beat Cal!

This is a sensitive post because Sulwen has family and friends on the Cal side of things as well as the Stanford side. Still, Stephen has been working hard on these new phrases for Sulwen's lexicon, "Go Stanford! Beat Cal!" We have refrained from teaching the typical "Cal sucks!" since "indubiously" that would be the phrase she would remember and say.

Stephen will be heading to the game solo on Saturday but Mom and Sulwen will be in full Stanford regalia listening on the radio or watching on the computer when we can.

Incidentally Sulwen is 4 for 4 at Stanford games. Every time she's gone to a game they've won. Fortunately, they've also won when she isn't present.

A Visit to the Horses

Stephen needed some manure for his compost and Sulwen wanted to visit the horses so we went for a family outing. It was a beautiful afternoon and we all got what we wanted in a quick trip!

October Visit from Grammy and Grandad

Grammy and Grandad made the long drive down to Timber Cove for another visit. We didn't make Grandad work so hard this time. Of course he did have pumpkin carving duties!

We visited the Fort Ross School (where Sulwen will go to preschool next year) where the community market was having Ag Day. Local sheep dogs were exhibiting their skills, farmers and crafts people sold their wares, there was a soft taco benefit for the school, as well as old farm machines and other livestock on hand to see.

As always it was a great visit that went by far too quickly!

Wood Chips and Tutus

Since we haven't had a recent "event" to post, I thought I'd share a few day-to-day moments.

We got a load of chips to put down around Sulwen's play structure. You can see Sulwen using her wheelbarrow to help unload and spread along with Stephen.

For the first time Sulwen showed interest in her hand-me-down tutu from cousin Fiona. We knew it was just a matter of time! She asked for it, put it on, and came down to play in her make believe playground.

Sulwen's First Children's Birthday Party

Sulwen has enjoyed her own birthday celebrations quite a lot but has never attended another child's birthday.

We were invited to a double "turning two" party in Santa Rosa at Howarth Park. Jaxon and his parents had the same midwife that we did (Constance Miles) and he was born about five weeks after Sulwen. Lorelei was the other little girl who turned two. We just met her family at the party.

It was a BIG birthday party with people coming and going and lots of activities (see below for some). The jumpy house and boom box were powered by solar panels (that's the type of crowd it was) and they even brought real dishes and cutlery to the park to cut down on waste. Impressive!

I think the party had quite an impact on Sulwen because we've been playing "birthday party" every morning until I can't quite stand doing it anymore. She'll definitely know how to sing along at the next birthday party we attend and she'll be an expert candle blower-outer!

Sulwen's New Play Set

Grammy and Grandad gifted Sulwen a play set for her birthday....installation and all. We got it set up this week and Sulwen has been enjoying it from the wee hours of the morning until late in the day. She even took off naked with just her shoes on this afternoon to go down the slide. I ran after her when I realized where she was going and offered my coat for her to slide down on. It would have been one uncomfortable ride without something under bare skin!

Thank you so much Grammy and Grandad. This is a gift Sulwen, her friends, and parents will enjoy for years to come!

Grammy, Grandad, Wheelbarrow, and Swing

It's always remarkable when Grammy and Grandad come to visit. Grammy is a never-ending wealth of creativity and fun for Sulwen and Grandad spends hours fixing things with the house and generally being handy.

This visit, Grandad was sentenced to time on the plumbing under the house and under the sink (thanks to yours truly). He did manage to put a wheelbarrow together that Grammy found for Sulwen and make a swing to hang on Tom and Claudia's pine tree since we lack any good limbs from which to hang a swing.

Thanks as always for coming. We love your visits and they go by too quickly!

Got Zucchini?

As summer gets ready to move into fall the garden's bounty is well, bountiful to say the least! It's clear from the following pictures that we can't keep on top of the zucchini among other things.

We headed over to harvest the larger ones to take to a drop off for homeless and less fortunate people. More than picking zucchini, Sulwen enjoyed the wheelbarrow. She constantly asks for it now when we go to the garden.

Anybody have some good zucchini recipes that use A LOT of zucchini? Feel free to share!

Sulwen Turns Two

Sulwen turned two on August 16th but we celebrated her birthday for many days!

First we had a trip to Talent to see Grammy, Grandad, Hailey Mama, Bill, Tate, Aunt Laura, Uncle Evan, Ian, Fiona, Grammy Becky, Mark and Darla Beardsley, and Dick and Mary Kay King. Whew! There are many omissions from that trip in the slide show. I guess we were too busy to take pictures all the time. Hopefully Grandad will pick up the slack! (Note: in fact he has! Go here to see more from the OR trip).

Needless to say, we had a fabulous trip and countless birthday festivities and family activities. We thank everyone for helping to make it such a memorable and fun celebration!

On Sulwen's real birthday Nanny drove up from Palo Alto to be in Timber Cove with us. It was birthday jubilee again and we are sure that Sulwen will take some time to realize that a birthday is just *one* day. Nanny really knows how to make a birthday special and we are grateful she could come up and be with us to celebrate.

Baby Workin'

One of Sulwen's recent word acquisitions is "working." She has the concept of "Daddy is working." When Stephen is downstairs on the computer, she'll stand at the top of the stairs and query, "Daddy workin'?"

And then she'll head down the stairs holding onto the rope saying, "Baby workin', Baby workin'." She climbs up into the office chair and starts her own version of working.

A Visit with the Lyerly Family

Yay! It's summertime and the Lyerly family was in California for a nice, long visit. We headed over to Sonoma to meet up with them, where it was scorching (over 110 farenheit at one point). We were glad that our activities mostly revolved around the pool at the Lodge at Sonoma, although we did muster up enthusiasm to visit Traintown one afternoon. Astropops were in order all around after that trip!

Later in the week Nanny and the Lyerly family made the trek out to Timber Cove, where the fog had kindly rolled in to provide a little relief from Sonoma's heat (although, those warm evenings are really nice!). What a treat it was to have them visit. Sulwen especially loved seeing her cousins one more time - even if on dry land this time.

We couldn't limit the photos to one slide show because Nanny and Annie both contributed by sharing their fabulous photos.

Grammy and Grandad's Summer Visit

Grammy and Grandad came to Timber Cove while Stephen was in India. The big project for Grandad was getting Sulwen's play area leveled out with the backhoe. He did an awesome job and we have the beginnings of a great play yard for Sulwen. I can't believe we don't have a photo of him on the backhoe in the slideshow!

Grandad also hooked up some rope on the stairs so Sulwen can have more independence coming down....and now she's comfortable using it and trying it out on her own. Grandad taught Sulwen how to throw balls "up high" and not "like a girl" (she is still reaching her arms up overhead and saying "up high, up high"). They also galloped together on home-made stick horses and read books.

Grammy and Sulwen laughed and laughed. Time with Grammy was super fun! Sulwen would call for "Mammy" in the morning before we headed downstairs. They threw balls, made the slide into a fort, played trains, drew and colored, read books, danced, and played "backhoe" in the sandbox that Grandad built and brought for her.

We all loved the visit and can't wait to see Grammy and Grandad again in August in Oregon. Thanks for coming!

A Few Moments at Filoli

We had a very brief visit with the Boulder Drapkins who were out from Colorado earlier this week. Unfortunately, my camera battery died and I wasn't able to document the festivities properly but hopefully Hayley Drapkin will be so kind as to send me some of the awesome photos off of her new digital camera (that is, if she can wrest it away from her dad).

We went to Filoli and below are a few photos from the trip before the camera battery took its last breath.

Washing the 850

As difficult as it is, Stephen has decided it's time to find the 1994 Volvo 850 Turbo Wagon a new home. It's been a great car for us - as Stephen puts it in his ad, "fast, fun, and functional."

This afternoon when we got home from having the car smogged (it passed!) Stephen and Sulwen lovingly gave it a bath so those who come to look at it don't just see a mass of pine pollen slapped all over.

We'll definitely miss this car when it goes and hope it goes to a good home. Stephen may pull a Dick Franke and take pictures of it as the new owner drives it away down the road with just the many fond memories left to have and hold.

We've been a little slow on getting postings up these days. We are in the midst of preparing for a meditation program that will take place in June here and it has kept us very busy.

The recent good news we have to share is that Sulwen's labs from last week all came back normal. From the outside we felt they would be that way but sometimes you have to validate from the inside too.

Sulwen and I managed to get out for a fairly typical afternoon yesterday while Stephen worked. These days it involves pushing her "car," collecting gems in her rock bucket, and saying hello to the horses.

Nanny came up again this year to make it a super special Mother's Day. We spent time together at home, hiking at Kruse Rhododendron Reserve (the rhodies had started blooming), taking a Sunday scenic drive from Sea View Road down Fort Ross Road and appreciating what it is to be a mother and have a mother, for that matter!

Thank you for coming Nanny and being the best mother-in-law any girl could dream of. Thank you Mom for your love, sacrifices, and inspiration all these years. And thank you Sulwen for making me a mother.

Love Is in the House in Boulder

We just returned from a great trip to Colorado to see the Boulder Drapkins and other family members. Sulwen was whisked away by her cousins into multiple adventures, met Wicket's cousin Angus and his fellow pog, Honey, was baby-sat for the longest time ever, celebrated Dad's birthday with the relatives, went on hikes, watched soccer games, and learned about Wii. It was a jam-packed, long weekend.

Thank you Boulder Drapkins for making it such a special visit. We felt welcomed and loved every minute - bike riding with and being helped up the stairs by Fin, reading books and playing stuffed animals with Jessica, dancing and laughing with Hayley, coloring and being cuddled by Lindsay. Uncle Mike always held Sulwen close, talking with and giving her love. Auntie Diane made sure she had plenty of vegetables to dip, toys to play with, a comfy bed, and quiet time to recover from each day's activities. We couldn't have asked for more! We love you.

Spring Flings with Dad

Sulwen and Stephen (and yes, occasionally myself) have been getting up to some fun these days. Spring has definitely sprung here in Timber Cove and it just feels right to be a little lighter, play a lot, don some hats, share some laughs, and fit in some cob web cleaning too when possible.

Sulwen's favorite spring hat these days is my pink and red sun hat.

It's always good to see things from another view every once in awhile.

Easter Egg Hunt

Sulwen had her first *real* Easter celebration this year. The Easter Bunny brought her a little basket of goodies and we put together a small egg hunt for a few children at our neighbor's house.

Our neighbor, Kris, has a lovely, green lawn in front of her house and the day was remarkably beautiful and warm. We were joined for festivities by Sulwen's friend Kai (17 months), his parents and grandmother, Kirin (3 1/2) and his mother Lizabet, Tom, Claudia, Kelly Sumner (who was visiting us), and of course, the hostess, Kris!

The kids weren't too interested in hunting for eggs but they did have fun playing in the grass, blowing bubbles, drinking out of wacky glasses, and being together.

We're Missing You, Dad!

Stephen left on Sunday to attend a meditation program in India. Since then we've all been missing him. Everybody's had to give a little to make things work but they are working out fine. There is always a lot of grace when one of us makes the trip to spend time in meditation.

We've kept busy (busy is Sulwen's middle name). Friends have come over to help out while I get in a few hours work. The week is nearly over and Dad will be home again on Sunday evening. It is a quick trip.

Sulwen, the Pogs, and I headed to Gerstle Cove one morning...windy but beautiful.

Green Valley 2009

Sulwen and I headed to Green Valley, Arizona for a quick visit with Grammy, Grandad, Hailey Mama, Susie Radeker and her mother, Sandy Cisneros. It was altogether way too short but we still had a perfectly wonderful time.

We managed to get in walks, try on lots of new outfits (thanks to Susie, Hailey, and Grammy), try out lots of new toys (thanks to Grammy, Grandad, and Sandy), go swimming, play Mexican Train, hike in Madera Canyon, feast on some delicious meals and enjoy catching up.

Thanks for making it such a fun and special trip everyone. We vowed that next year's visit has to be longer!

Meeting Aunt Josie

At long last Sulwen got a chance to meet Aunt Josie. She was visiting Nanny from Colorado and we drove down to Palo Alto to see her.

It was a very short visit but we had some great walk-talks and quality time together. A more attentive listener than Aunt Josie, there was not!

We look forward to seeing Aunt Josie again at the end of April when we go to Boulder for a visit.

It was truly wonderful to meet her and you can tell by the pictures that Sulwen just loves her great aunt (and so do the pogs!).

We recently met Kai Turley who is exactly three months younger than Sulwen. He lives just up the road a bit. His mom, Ireine, is originally from Japan and an artist/designer. His dad, Rick, is in the solar business. Kai is extremely happy, easy going, and about as cute as they come! He is also an only child and not used to being around other toddlers.

We had a brief meeting at the Timber Cove Inn where the two were mostly shy with each other but very curious. Hopefully we'll get to see each other more often and Sulwen can forge a friendship with someone around the same age, at last. Nice to meet you, Kai!

We've all had colds, hence the hiatus in posting anything. Finally we're all feeling better. Sulwen is in fact now off of all her steroids and NSAIDs. We're keeping a very close watch on her but she's doing great.

We'll get up a video or two in the next few days as well when we find the time. Keeping up with Sulwen keeps us very busy.

Water Outside and In

We know Sulwen likes water. The kitchen sink has always been a favorite but water outside is fun for her too.

We've been having lots of rain so yesterday we suited her up during a little dry spell to go to the garden. She's splashed in a few puddles before but they were better yesterday because they were a little more substantial (although truthfully we've avoided the really big puddles so far).

Once home, Sulwen continued her water fest from the "tower" as she helped wash and prep the kale for lunch. I'm not sure I should have taken off her rain jacket before I let her at the kitchen sink!

Two Recent Videos

Here are two recent videos of Sulwen. In the first one she is calling out for "Daddy" who went upstairs without her after they had been together all morning. She was clearly wanting the morning to continue in that vein!

In the second video Sulwen was out for a walk around Amanita Circle with Wicket. Stephen managed to capture just a short bit of it but you can get a glimpse of her enthusiasm for walking and adventuring these days.

Last Friday Sulwen and I finally got together with our friends Lizabet and Kirin. Kirin is three years old. He has been asking about Sulwen and although we still have to be a little cautious about germs we decided a walk out at Gualala Point would be safe. It was a little chilly but absolutely beautiful there as it always is. Now we can't wait to see each other again and to let Kirin and Sulwen play together on a more regular basis.

Winter's Bounty

Thanks to a mild winter so far, Claudia's garden is still going strong. We headed over today to pick some vegetables for lunch...you can see the story in pictures below.

Mom thinks, "We can put this energy to more constructive use! Let's go to the garden."

Physical Therapy, Stanford Rheumatology, and Nanny

Last Thursday we headed down to Stanford via Rohnert Park to meet with Sulwen's doctors for a routine check-up.

Our first stop in Rohnert Park was to meet with Sulwen's physical therapist, Emily. Sulwen is in the average range for her age group with gross motor skills but her doctors had recommended physical therapy when she wasn't walking. She is still a little wobbly. We usually work with Emily for a little bit and then head into a play group where there are more physical and occupational therapists and children and toys. We'll continue working with Emily and trying to attend play group until California Childrens' Services takes over her care.

We had a good visit with Sulwen's rheumatologists. They said she was looking great and were pleased with her progress. We even got the green light to accelerate the tapering of her steroids even more. We had her labs drawn again and it turned out that everything was still in the normal range except for her platelet count which was a bit elevated...but not elevated enough for it to cause concern quite yet. The platelet count is a non-specific inflammatory marker (just one of many they look at) and it could be high due to the infection in her toes, fighting a cold, or something else. We'll get her checked again in two weeks to make sure that this isn't the beginning of a flare-up.

After seeing her doctors we went to Nanny's where we stayed for several days. Stephen worked from Nanny's house while Sulwen, Nanny and I got in some shopping. Stephen did manage to catch a Stanford basketball game with his mom and was very pleased that his team beat Cal. Go Cardinal! Sulwen was in a great mood (as were the pogs) for our visit. DPT (Daddy-Pookie Time)

We've let the posts lapse a bit, partially because Tanna is back to work now. After a three month hiatus, she was able to return to working for Stanford and doing some consulting projects. That means Stephen and Sulwen are getting a lot more DPT (Daddy-Pookie Time).

During DPT things get a little more wacky and exuberant at times, a lot more fun at times, and sometimes they get a bit more disciplined and serious. It's good all around.

Of course Stephen is getting back to work too after the holidays, so Sulwen and Mom still have plenty of time together. We feel pretty darn lucky that we can both work from home and take turns caring for Sulwen!

Holidays at Home

Sulwen's second Christmas was spent at home. Family came from near and far to help make merry and share the joy of this special time of year. We thank all of them!

The Evan Franke family was here from Maryland. Grammy and Grandad stopped on their way to winter in Green Valley and Hailey Mama and Bill braved the snow and ice to come down from Medford.

Sulwen went hot tubbing with cousins Ian and Fiona and got some lap time with Aunt Laura and Uncle Evan. We went geocaching in Stillwater Cove Park, hiked trails and went swimming at The Sea Ranch, exchanged and opened gifts, played games, and had a wonderful time visiting. We wish we all lived just a bit closer together!

It's definitely true that Sulwen has to take a lot of medications and remedies. Six are prescription, five are herbal, and there are some vitamins, probiotics, and homeopathic remedies too. It's a lot to get down a 16 month old, especially since some medications are given four times a day.

Added to that, Sulwen now gets to soak her toes in epsom salts and get them doctored up with ointment twice a day too. She has developed some severe ingrown toenails on both big toes and we've now put her on some antibiotics to help stave off infection. She is also fighting a little cold, so it seems.

We've tried various techniques to give her medicine. Syringes work best. As helpful as syringes are for measuring and dosing, Sulwen still has her own techniques to thwart medicine imbibing. Stephen is the creative doser and distraction, preferably very funny and weird, will give the slight respite in her thwarting tactics so that the syringe can go in and the meds can go down. You can see one of the latest below. Of course new distraction ideas are needed constantly so the creative juices are always primed.

We also try to make sure that Sulwen gets to give both of us some "medicine" via syringes each time she gets hers. It's usually latte flavored in the mornings and herb tea in the evenings. She laughs and enjoys that part of her medicine taking best.

Here Comes Nanny Claus!

Nanny is always busy but during the Christmas holidays, busy does not even begin to describe this incredible woman's schedule. Fortunately, we were on the "nice" list this year and got to celebrate the holidays a little early with Nanny Claus.

Sulwen was a little young last year to fully take in the Christmas holidays but as you can see in the following photos, when you're 16 months old, things start to make a little more sense.

Good Thursday

We had a big day on Thursday. We took Sulwen to a physical therapist for an assessment and then down to Stanford for a check-in with the Rheumatology doctors. An added bonus was that we got to see Nanny before and after our visit to Lucile Packard.

The great news is that she is exactly where she should be for her age with her gross and finer motor skills. We'll continue to meet with the pediatric physical therapist for awhile to know how to be on the lookout for any arthritis that may come.

The appointment at Stanford was equally positive. Sulwen had gained two pounds, looked very good to the doctors, and they decided to begin reducing her steroids pretty aggressively. Our next appointment will be in about four weeks.

Grammy and Grandad have been visiting this past week, helping us with things around the house and catching up on items we've put on the back burner. What lifesavers! They even got the house feeling and looking like Christmas.

Sulwen had a ball playing with Grammy and discovering the rocking boat that Grandad made for Evan when he was little. The rocking boat has been enjoyed by all the Richard Franke children (myself included) and Evan's children. Now Sulwen is delighting in it (see below).

We continue to be pleased and grateful that Sulwen is doing so well. We also continue to be thankful for the amazing support of family and friends.

Sulwen's Recent Activities

We've been trying a few different herbs to help Sulwen deal with the extreme irritability that two of her medicines can cause. After three days of using them, we think that the chamomile and valerian mixes recommended to us are helping. Sulwen has had fewer night time tantrums and generally better moods during the day. It's fun for us to see her sparkling again and she's keeping us laughing at her antics.

Here are a few pictures and videos of recent activities. She enjoys her bath times again, likes playing with the dogs more than ever, and has found a new play item in the office - the chair that spins!

We'll head back to Stanford on Thursday this week as well as meet with a physical therapist to assess what kind of help she needs. We'll share what we find out.

As Hailey Mama, it is my pleasure to share with you some images of my dear half-child walking again - on her own - quite deliberately - usually in search of fun and food and her Mama. She doesn't last too long upright, but her parents report that they will be using all the child locks again.

We're heartened by her actions and still hope for more peaceful times as steroid intake is reduced. Her parents are incredible - these times are not easy.

Steroids are working

Sulwen sports a new tummy and chin on steroids while playing with toothbrushes - good dental hygenie is important at all ages.

It's Hailey Mama here with an update on Sulwen and how she is doing. As you have noted, she has been a very busy little girl with a very busy social calendar. Yesterday, she made the journey into Santa Rosa where she bravely, without tears, gave a lot of blood for lab work.

It appears that the steroids are working. They are producing all the side effects they are known for: increased appetite, mood fluctuations, restlessness, irritability. They also seem to be keeping her symptoms at bay: no more fevers, rashes and physical discomfort.

For me, the most difficult side effect is the way it affects her mood. You could say that she throws "tantrums on steroids." Sulwen is prone to fairly aggressive outbursts several times a day/night that last as long as 30 minutes and involve all of her being. She is quite uncontrollable and this little package of 21 pounds is the strongest little force when the rage and adrenaline hit. It is physically and emotionally exhausting for everyone. I believe this is why Sulwen has spent most of her days eating, sleeping and just "being" without much play or other activities - she just doesn't have the energy for more. I know Tanna and Stephen long for a quiet night with only a few tears perhaps. Hopefully this will come when Sulwen tapers off steroids.

The great news is that when she isn't suffering from an attack, she spends time smiling and being content at home with all the activities going on around her. In fact tonight after a bad spell, she came through it and played more than she has since she has been home. Stephen, Tanna and I played with her using her music machine and other toys. She crawled and tried to walk, alternating going between the three of us (but mostly her parents). She was one happy little girl.

And then the phone rang...it was the doctors with the lab results from yesterday. Guess what? Steroids are working! Sulwen's counts were ALL within normal ranges - normal. They thought she looked great on paper! In fact the doctors, Tanna and Stephen made a decision to start tapering Sulwen off her steroids tonight. It is a very small percent that they reduce at a time, but it is a start. Sulwen has an appointment at LPCH Rheumatology Clinic next Thursday, so they will see how she does with reduced doses for just over a week.

I left the family tonight as they were headed off to their meditation and to hopefully lull Sulwen into a restful sleep for a few hours. I pray that their night has fewer outbursts with reduced intensity. They all could use a break - especially to reflect on the good news that tonight brought.

Boulder Drapkin Visit

The Boulder Drapkins made the long trek out from Colorado and all the way up the coast to Timber Cove to visit us over the Thanksgiving holiday. We were so grateful to see them all. Sulwen was in good spirits (not so easy to come by these days) and enjoyed being with all of her cousins. We'll let the pictures speak for themselves about the great time had by all.

Quick Update

It's Hailey Mama here and I want to wish all of you a wonderful holiday weekend. There is much for which we are grateful and thankful.

Sulwen and her parents are at home and doing well. Since the Franke Grandparents' departure on Tuesday, Sulwen and her parents have been busy. Stephen has been working, Tanna has been catching up on being at home and everyone continues to be focused on Sulwen and her care.

Sulwen is tolerating the steroids, anti-inflammatories and blood pressure medication - and the meds seem to be doing their job. The greatest daily challenge is that she and Tanna have restless nights, but the hope is that normal sleep will return after Sulwen finishes her month-long course of steroids. She is eating well again (especially now that she has been introduced to cookies by me) and is crawling again in a limited way. She is reorienting herself to favorite toys, like the "slide to nowhere" and figuring out how to approach them since her loss of strength won't allow her to engage as she did a few months ago.

On Thanksgiving Day, Sulwen had a busy social schedule full of play and interactions with her Boulder Drapkin cousins, Aunt Diane and Uncle Michael. Her world slowly is moving back to a more normal stance.

On Monday, Sulwen will have labs/blood work done to make sure her body is fighting the right fight still and she is slated to start physical therapy soon, too. Tanna may post some images from the holiday weekend but more news will come next week.

Medical Play

In an ongoing attempt to help Sulwen process her experiences over the past six weeks Grammy, Grandad, Stephen, and I sat down in the living room today and played with some of the items in her medical kit from the Child Life specialists.

At each hospital Child Life was a fantastic resource for Sulwen and us. After her eight days at LPCH she came home with a cloth bag full of "familiar" medical items and cloth dollies with which she could play, get used to, and work through some of what she had experienced.

After we played a little and Sulwen beamed a few smiles at everyone, Grammy and Grandad headed back to Talent, OR. We are so thankful they made the long trip to Timber Cove to help out for just a couple of short days. Thanks Mom and Dad!

Clinic Day - Cousin Day

Today Sulwen and her parents had an appointment in the ambulatory (outpatient) clinic for Juvenile Rheumatology at LPCH. They reunited with five specialists who have been a part of Sulwen's care there. Although her appointment was with two of the physicians, three others dropped in on Sulwen to see her and say hello. Honestly, Sulwen has that kind of social magnetism that draws people to her!

The feedback from the physicians was that she is doing well. She has gained back 1.5 pounds and the steroid treatment seems to be working at keeping her symptoms at bay and moving most of her blood counts in the right direction. Sulwen's blood pressure remains above normal, so they will try a higher dose of the transdermal clonidine with her. In addition, they also prescribed physical therapy for a few weeks to help her regain muscle strength in her arms and legs. Overall, the specialists reiterated that there is no way to know what her prognosis is based on where she is at today and on how she is responding to steroid treatment. They are quick to state how much better she looks and that they are encouraged that she is responding to the steroids.

After her appointment, Sulwen reunited with the "Boulder Drapkins" - Michael, Diane and their four children (all pictured here minus Diane). They are in the Bay Area for Thanksgiving week and it was a very happy reunion. Sulwen was delighted to see her cousins briefly and Tanna reported that all the kids have grown up since she last saw them in August!

Sulwen will continue her steroid treatment at home and begin physical therapy soon. She will have lab work done next week locally in Santa Rosa and then go back to the ambulatory clinic at LPCH the week after next.

I know this is a tentative time for Sulwen and her parents - every day brings the joys of re-entering their "old life" as well as the challenges of transitioning to an indescribably altered "new life." Tanna and Stephen have shown an inner strength and resolve to take each step with conviction and to gracefully bend with the twists and turns of the unknown.

Home Sweet Home - Take 2!

We were glad to be home again this weekend after what seemed like a very long week in the hospital. I think Stephen and I have finally come to accept that we may end up in the hospital again at any time (although hopefully not) and that it may be for any length of time (hopefully short).

Hailey Mama followed us back up to Timber Cove on Friday and Grammy and Grandad came down from Oregon on Saturday to be with us for a few days. Sulwen is definitely apprehensive these days and has a hard time with anyone being in her space except for Mom and Dad. After having weeks of people walking through doors and focusing their attention, hands, wires, stethoscopes, and needles on you, we figure it's going to take some time to get readjusted. She's been through some pretty scary and painful things and it's not picnics and daisies yet.

Still, Sulwen rallied to play with Grammy some and managed a few smiles in Grandad's direction. We've been grateful to have them here.

Since we got home her appetite has increased the way we expected it to once on steroids. She has reinstated her version of the Michael Phelps diet. Good thing, since she even tried to take a few steps on her own this evening! Stephen and I have also been heartened that Sulwen is taking her medications like a champ. She is on 6 (yes, count 'em, 6) prescription medications. Fortunately, she just has to take 4 of them twice a day. She opens her mouth for them and rarely even fusses now. At the hospital it was a different story.

We're heading down to Palo Alto to see the Rheumatologists tomorrow at an outpatient clinic. We will likely have more news to share after that.

Thank Goodness, it's Friday

Just a quick posting to let you all know that Sulwen and her parents left the hospital late this afternoon to make their way home to Timber Cove. Sulwen transitioned to the oral steroid without too much difficulty. She has several oral medications she will take at home and her parents will be taking her blood pressure twice a day to make sure it stays within a normal range. The family will be back at Stanford on Monday for a check-up with the Rheumatologists.

The next step for Sulwen is to continue with the steroid treatment and to get a lot of rest. Her immune system is suppressed, so our little princess will not attend very many social events for awhile. I know the family is ready for some down time at home where they can closely monitor Sulwen for improvements as she continues with her treatment.

Again, I want to thank everyone who has been so supportive - the caring and love that each of you extend is felt in the hearts of the Timber Cove Drapkins.

Sulwen in Slo-Mo

Sulwen had a super "slo-mo" (slow-motion) kind of day. She spent most of the day cat-napping and catching up on rest. The change in her demeanor is due to a new antihypertensive medication she is taking to counterbalance an increase in blood pressure caused by her steroid treatment. She is wearing a small transdermal patch on her back that remains for a week at a time. Most likely, her body will adjust to the medication in a few days and her energy should return. It also is likely that she only will need this as long as she is taking the steroids, which is slated to last approximately one month.

One of the highlights of the day was receiving the results of her ferritin levels. Ferritin is one of the inflammatory markers the Rheumatology team uses to monitor how her body is responding to the steroid treatment in fighting the arthritis. The day had all the regular events plus some preliminary planning for tomorrow. Tomorrow, Sulwen will transition off the IV steroids and onto an oral form. She also will have new lab work done that will be helpful in assessing how her body is responding to the treatment. Lastly, there is a chance that she will be discharged tomorrow and be able to go home. This is the best news, but we're not getting overly excited since we know that this road has unexpected twists and turns.

Settling in - hopefully not for too long

I'm sitting on the hospital bed with Tanna and Sulwen as we wind down for the day (hopefully). I started my day off by visiting Peet's Coffee so I could enter the hospital room double-fisted with lattes first thing in the morning. Nancy is the lead latte lady lately, but I am trying to augment her visits by an early morning run.

Sulwen had a fitful night, but her side effects were manageable. Mom and Dad slept a bit too. She was ready to go this morning and was already playing with her Mom when I arrived. I brought a few fun socks for her - all mismatch socks and she liked checking them out.

Her Dad got to work. It is quite amazing that he can sit (and sleep!) in that narrow chair for 8 hours and work on the Internet. Although he is giving me the thumbs up in this picture, I know it can be wearisome and challenging to sit all day in the hospital room while Sulwen goes through exams and daily encounters with all kinds of medical personnel.

I also had lunch duty today - the menu was quinoa, lentils, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, chard and sweet potatoes. Sulwen, Tanna and I had a picnic on the floor with Mozart playing in the background. It was great to see Sulwen bounce and sway with the music between grabbing with great gusto a bit of everything on her plate.
Later in the day, she had a bath, a nap and then a visit from Nanny who played with her "unplugged." They were able to unplug her IV for a short time so she could move uninhibited. And move she did! She crawled around and even tried to stand on her own.

The day signified settling in to what could be called a routine day. Her specialists make rounds, spend a short time with her and her parents to review status and plot next steps. Sulwen's fever and rash have been kept at bay. She has some side effects from the steroids but they are manageable. The next benchmark will be on Friday after she finishes this round of IV steroids and transitions to oral medication.

A typical day here isn't as bad as it could be...the hospital room smells like chai and lavendar (a real Drapkin touch) and we can listen to Mozart and have picnics. But it wears on everyone to be surrounded by such illness and sadness, to be confined to a room indoors. The family is hoping with all their hearts that they can go home soon. But the last six weeks have taught them that every plan can change, hopes can be dashed and the road to recovery is not straight and narrow. Their faith and inner strength carry them and it has an even greater presence in this room than the chai and lavendar.

Hang Ten!

Welcome to Tuesday, a new day, a new beginning to steroid treatment and a breath of fresh air (if we're given enough of a break from playing with Sulwen). Sulwen started her steroids last night and the family actually rested and slept. It was a very different scene I walked in on this morning. Everyone looked somewhat refreshed and Tanna reported not even waking up when the nurse came in to do vitals at 4 AM!

Whether Sulwen was feeling the steroids or just feeling better, who cares! Today was about playing and smiling and laughing and flirting and being the best little girl in the universe.

Although the reduced dose of steroids means she may be in the hospital longer, it certainly means a happier little girl for now. Enjoy the pictures from today (oh - there are some for yesterday too - I updated the posting below). We had a lot of fun!
